5th Grade Grading Policy

Amongst the 5th grade team, students are all held to the same expectations for both formative and summative assessment grades. Students and parents alike can confuse which assessment type is which along with what these assessments are primarily used for. Read below to find out about each assessment type as well as 5th grade's policy on corrections.

Formative Assessments:

Defined: Assessments that are completed throughout the unit of study. Formative assessments can be both formal or informal, but these assessments are to track progress, not to solely check for mastery.

Examples: Informal observations, classroom discussions, in class assignments, exit tickets, quizzes on a few lessons at a time

Does this assessment type allow corrections?: No, formative assessments are used to monitor student understanding and gather data to drive further instruction.

Summative Assessments:

Defined: Assessments that are completed at the conclusion of a unit of study. Summative assessments are higher stakes, meaning that the score of these assessments can significantly alter a child's overall grade in the course.

Examples: Cumulative projects or tests on an entire unit of study

Does this assessment type allow corrections?: Yes, summative assessments are able to be corrected for half points back. Students will be able to opt for in class summative assessment corrections at the conclusion of each unit of study.
